Genetic engineering and biotechnologies-Pandorra’s box or panacea for sustainable development

The subject of the genetic engineering and biotechnologies includes themes that concern health protection and medical researches, as well as modifications of plants and animals for our human needs. The attitudes towards these controversial themes from our project vary in every country –participant. The aim of our project is to show that these attitudes are determined to a great extent by cultural, psychological and religious environment. Another goal is to improve our scientific knowledge on these topics. Furthermore, it has to be seen how science can be applied for solving some of problems of the modern society. Nowadays we are becoming more and more aware that not all of the scientific innovations can be brought into being because of various political, religious and economical reasons which differ in different countries. Political awareness as a part of the European citizenship is our third objective. This awareness has been a necessary condition of Bulgarian membership. Social awareness is one of the most important aims of our project, too. Project meetings are also very important events both for students and teachers. There we can share our opinions and make international contacts. They are also very useful for the students-they can improve their language skills, their ability to stand up for their own point of view and to benefit from their IT skills.
